The smallest type of cow is a breed called Dexter, which was bred a small size for household living.
Cows were domesticated about 5,000 years ago.

Per day, a cow spends 6 hours eating and 8 hours chewing cud.
The average cow drinks about 30 gallons of water and eats about 95 pounds of feed per day.
A cow stands up and lies down about 14 times a day.
A cow's heart beats between 60 and 70 beats per minute.
Cows can hear lower and higher frequencies better than humans.

Origin of the Breed
The Holstein cow originated in Europe. The major historical developement of this breed occured in what is now the Netherlands and more specifically in the two northern provices of North Holland and Friesland which lay on either side of the Zuider Zee. The original stock were the black animals and white animals of the Batavians and Friesians, migrant European tribes who settled in the Rhine Delta region about 2,000 years ago.
For many years, Holsteins were bred and strictly culled to obtain animals which would make best use of grass, the area's most abundant resource. The intermingling of these animals evolved into an efficient, high-producing black-and-white dairy cow.

Imports to America

After the New World was settled, and markets began to develop for milk in America, dairy breeders turned to Holland for their seed stock.

Winthrop Chenery, a Massachusetts breeder, purchased a Holland cow from a Dutch sailing master who landed cargo at Boston in 1852. The cow had furnished the ship's crew with fresh milk during the voyage. She proved to be such a satisfactory producer, that Chenery made later importations of Holsteins in 1857, 1859 and 1861. Many other breeders soon joined the race to establish Holsteins in America.

After about 8,800 Holsteins had been imported, cattle disease broke out in Europe and importation ceased.

Americans Build Their Own Breed

In the late 1800's there was enough interest among Holstein breeders to form associations for the recording of pedigrees and maintenance of herdbooks. These associations merged in 1885 to found the Holstein-Friesian Association of America, the Holstein Association.

Characteristics of Holsteins
Holsteins are most quickly recognized by their distinctive color markings and outstanding milk production.
Physical Characteristics

Holsteins are large, stylish animals with color patterns of black and white or red and white.

A healthy Holstein calf weighs 90 pounds or more at birth. A mature Holstein cow weighs about 1500 pounds and stand 58 inches tall at the shoulder.

Holstein heifers can be bred at 15 months of age, when they weigh about 800 pounds. It is desirable to have Holstein females calve for the first time between 24 and 27 months of age. Holstein gestation is approximately nine months.

While some cows may live considerably longer, the normal productive life of a Holstein is six years.

Milk Production

Average production for all Holsteins enrolled in official U.S. production-testing programs in 1987 was 17,408 pounds of milk, 632 pounds of butterfat and 550 pounds of protein per year.

Okay so one can't just GO vegetarian overnight. :O). Anyway i really want to do this now. I found out this girl at my work is a veg, so if she can do it then so can I. Maybe i can ask her about it. Eventhough she walked in whilst I was eating chiken. Chiken is my last meat to give up and it's hard. Not chiken but the dairy products. I was thinking or drawing a cow on my hand and look b4 I eat. I need that motivation. Cows don't fail me now. I lub you chillens.

Ya know....I am really beginning to know that I am meant to be a vegetarian. I need to leave chiken alone and I'll be on the high road to vegetarian nirvana. The reason I say this is because I hate touching dead chiken. When ever it comes through my line it stinks and it's all pooling in blood, sinew, and other chiken drippings. Dead, decaying chiken blood is so disgusting. *gags* and also those pork or beef loins that come in like a tightly packed plastic case almost...yeah they feel disgusting when you touch them. I just think that it is a piece of a once living cow. By the time you cook it up and put it on your plate it has decayed pretty much aside from being frozen, but freezing doesn't stop it from going bad though unless all cell life stops...including bacteria which can be extremely resistant to subzero temps some types anyway. Also it has come to my belief that people in my part of Oklahoma could give a flying hoot about dented cans. A word to the wise...which there aren't many of, DON'T but dented cans. Get the pretty looking ones. Don't risk botulism. Botulism can hide in cans. The bacteria are pressed into dented cans and can produce their endospores inside. Endospores are resistant to heat, so no matter what temp you cook those green beans at you will not kill the endospores. Thusly, you will get botulism real quick and maybe die, so have fun vomiting. I'm sure that's fun....yeah you think that it could never happen to you but just be safe. Be safe with meat as well. None of this medium rare bullshit. Never rare...even at the classiest restaurant. And if it is from a classy restaurant sue them like there is no tomorrow. Sue the MF'ing pants off those mf'ers. Cuz my friend got E.Coli poisoning from eating that kind of meat and she lost like 50 lbs...no exaggeration here. She was hospitalized for 6 months, she almost died, she urinated blood (no she wasn't on her period), she vomited everything (blood, gastric contents, etc), she became emaciated, and throughout this ordeal she was dealing with anorexia....weird huh? Good thing she caught the E.Coli poisoning, because she may have just though that she was losing weight due to her anorexia.
